Les Paul Setup Specs
Measure your Guitar’s Action
1.Tune the guitar to pitch and ensure that your neck relief has been properly adjusted.
A Gibson Les Paul. This one is a model H-90 that I refretted with 6105 stainless steel frets. All guitars need setup work from time to time, especially if they undergo other related repairs such as fretwork.
- Hi, I thought the following guide might be helpful for the not so technically experienced players and for those, who dont know a good (!) guitar tech: Les Paul Setup Guide ( - click ) BTW. Its also worth to read the comments below the article.
- Nov 05, 2013 I've seen some different setup opinions so I figured I'd ask here. What do you pro techs/luthiers think is the best neck relief and string height for low/fast action and minimal buzz on a Les Paul? I adjusted my truss rod and capoing the first and fretting the 17th I've got.012 on either side.
Some Luthiers will install a capo at the first fret in order to prevent the nut height from being a factor in their measurements. If you opt to do this, be sure that you repeat this on your next setup as well. The capo will give you a lower measurement when installed so you’ll want to be sure you have it in place at every setup once you’ve figured out your desired action.
2.Place the ruler on the 12th fret, making sure the ruler ticks are parallel to the string.
Do this so that you’re getting an accurate measurement of the gap from the top of the fret to the bottom of the low E- string.
3. Raise, lower, or leave the action.
Now you’ll need to make the decision to raise, lower or leave the action alone. Everyone’s setup preferences are a little different. For example, Jeff Beck prefers low action (3/64ths) whereas Stevie Ray Vaughn prefers a higher action (7/64ths) to accommodate his more aggressive technique. You may want to experiment and determine what’s best for your playing style.

Billy Gibbons nicknamed the Reverend Willie G, is best known as the guitar player for the band ZZ Top. He is also the lead vocalist and composer for many of the band's classic songs. Gibbons is known for playing a classic 1959 Gibson Les Paul guitar he calls Miss Pearly Gates. He is known to play his guitar using a quarter or a peso as a pick, lending a distinctive sound to his playing.
So here's the deal for this list. It is really hard to find out exactly what gear Billy Gibbons uses/has used. We have over 14 different resources we used to get this list together, but there are certainly gaps for you to help fill in. If you check the pictures we have, you'll see one of billy's rack from 2008.
Let's look at some of the gear and equipment that has been seen in Billy Gibbons's guitar rig.
